The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has presented 88 post-mortem reports as evidence in the ongoing murder trial of Pastor Paul Mackenzie and 30 co-accused at the Mombasa High Court
During Tuesday’s proceedings, witness testimonies shed more light on the tragic events linked to Mackenzie’s controversial teachings, which allegedly led to mass deaths in the Shakahola forest
One of the witnesses, 60-year-old Titus Ngonyo Gandi, recounted how he lost four family members, including his wife, two children one of them a GSU officer a grandchild, and his daughter-in-law
He told the court that he first noticed unusual changes in his wife in 2019 when she began resisting their children’s education and warned neighbours against engaging with the government or acquiring official documents

Another witness, 23-year-old Robert Kithi, narrated how he escaped from the forest in 2023 after Mackenzie instructed followers to fast in preparation for ascension to heaven
Kithi said that believers were told the rapture would occur three years after 2021, prompting many to move into the forest. He added that he later buried two siblings, although his mother refused to let him retrieve their bodies, claiming they had “ascended”
