Kenya Rights Activists Condemn Suluhu Over ‘Crack the Whip’ Remarks

Kenya Human rights groups have intensified criticism against Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan following her controversial remarks on handling youth-led protests across the region.

Kenya Human rights groups have intensified criticism against Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan following her controversial remarks on handling youth-led protests across the region.

The Kenya Human Rights Commission condemned President Suluhu over statements perceived to support a heavy-handed response against Gen Z activists and pro-democracy demonstrators in both Kenya and Tanzania.

The backlash emerged after Suluhu reportedly called for authorities to “crack the whip” on individuals involved in anti-government protests, remarks that have triggered concern among civil society groups and rights defenders.

Activists argue that the comments undermine democratic freedoms and could embolden security agencies to suppress dissent through intimidation and force. They warned that young people across East Africa have increasingly used peaceful demonstrations and digital activism to demand accountability, economic reforms, and respect for constitutional rights.

The commission accused regional governments of attempting to silence youthful voices instead of addressing the underlying grievances driving public anger, including unemployment, governance concerns, and the rising cost of living.

Rights defenders further cautioned that inflammatory rhetoric from top leaders risks escalating tensions at a time when civic activism among young people is growing rapidly across the region.

The remarks have sparked heated debate online, with many Kenyans and Tanzanians questioning the role of governments in safeguarding freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.

The controversy comes amid heightened political activism by Gen Z movements that have continued to shape national conversations on governance and accountability in East Africa
