How to Register as a Voter in Kenya 2026:Denials and Penalties

1. How to Register as a Voter
- An eligible voter must appear in person before a registration officer at a designated registration centre during working hours.
- The applicant must present original identification documents, either a national ID card or a valid Kenyan passport.
- The applicant fills out the Application for Registration form (Form A).
- After registration, the voter is issued with a registration acknowledgement slip containing their details.
- The slip is not required when voting during elections.
2. When Someone Can Be Denied Registration
- If the person is under 18 years of age.
- If the person does not have the original national ID card or a valid Kenyan passport.
- If the person is an undischarged bankrupt.
- If the person has been found guilty by an election court of an electoral offence within the past five years.
- If a competent court has declared the person to be of unsound mind.
3. Registering More Than Once
- A person is only allowed to register once in a constituency or registration centre of their choice.
- Registering more than once is an offence under the law.
4. Penalty for Double Registration
- A fine of up to KSh100,000, or
- Imprisonment for up to one year, or
- Both a fine and imprisonment.
- The person may also be barred from participating in the immediate election and the one that follows.
5. Transfer of Voter Registration
- A registered voter is allowed to transfer to another registration centre or constituency of their choice.
- The transfer must be done within the official voter registration period.
