JSC Opens Applications to Fill Supreme Court Vacancy After Justice Mohamed Ibrahim’s Death

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has объявed a vacancy in the Supreme Court following the death of Justice Mohamed Ibrahim
In a Gazette notice issued on Tuesday, Chief Justice and JSC Chairperson Martha Koome invited qualified Kenyans to apply for the position in line with the Constitution, the Judicial Service Act, and Article 166 of the Constitution
The successful applicant will serve until attaining the mandatory retirement age of 70 years, with an option for early retirement at 65
According to the JSC, the position attracts a gross monthly salary ranging between Ksh. 956,192 and Ksh. 1,268,996, excluding additional benefits as determined by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission
Applicants must hold a law degree from a recognised university or be advocates of the High Court of Kenya, with at least 15 years’ experience either as a judge of a superior court or as a distinguished legal practitioner, academic, or judicial officer

Candidates are also required to meet the leadership and integrity standards outlined in Chapter Six of the Constitution
Justice Ibrahim passed away on December 17, 2025, creating a vacancy in the seven-member Supreme Court bench
He was widely regarded as a respected jurist who made significant contributions to Kenya’s constitutional jurisprudence and the growth of the Judiciary
