Embu Senator Alexander Munyi Mundigi has dismissed claims by the Democratic Party of Kenya (DPK) alleging that he campaigned for a rival candidate in the Mbeere North parliamentary race, describing the accusations as baseless and procedurally flawed

In a response dated December 18, 2025, Mundigi’s legal team formally challenged the party-issued summons, which accused him of supporting a candidate other than DPK’s nominee

Through lawyer Danstan Omari, the Senator stated that he was first informed of the allegations while on official duty in Uganda and was not given a chance to respond before disciplinary proceedings were initiated

The Senator, who serves as acting Deputy Party Leader, sought to meet the party’s Secretary General upon his return to Kenya to address the claims. However, the summons was delivered to his personal assistant at Parliament Buildings instead

Mundigi’s team argued that the party acted prematurely, noting that under Articles 9 and 10 of the DPK constitution and by-laws, the National Delegates Committee and the National Governing Council are responsible for convening and approving decisions on coalition participation and disciplinary actions

The legal team further emphasized that DPK remains a member of the Kenya Kwanza coalition, allowing Mundigi the right to support candidates within the coalition framework

They also highlighted that the Senator has consistently paid party dues, has not resigned, and has not acted against the party’s interests

Lawyer Omari criticized the threat of expulsion without prior engagement, describing it as an attempt to undermine Mundigi’s leadership role within the party

Senator Mundigi affirmed his loyalty and commitment to the Democratic Party of Kenya, stating that he continues to serve as acting Deputy Party Leader
