Former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama has warned Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and other political figures against forming tribal-based coalitions as the country gears up for the 2027 General Election
Speaking on Sunday in Kwale County, Muthama now a Commissioner at the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) urged leaders to abandon ethnicity-driven politics and instead focus on national unity and development
He noted that Kenya’s political space has increasingly been dominated by divisive rhetoric and rivalry, often amplified in public forums and across social media platforms
“My position in our nation of Kenya is not to support tribal or community-based leadership,” Muthama said

Emphasizing the importance of inclusivity, Muthama argued that no single ethnic community has the numerical strength to determine presidential outcomes on its own
He said national leadership is shaped by the collective will of all Kenyans
“Kenya is a big country, and it is not Kikuyu votes that make a president, it is not Kamba votes that make a president; it is the votes of Kenyans,” he stated
Muthama cited past administrations, noting that former Presidents Jomo Kenyatta, Daniel arap Moi, Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta were elected through broad national support rather than narrow ethnic alignments
He called on leaders positioning themselves for the 2027 race to reject divisive politics and work towards building inclusive national coalitions that unite Kenyans across communities

His remarks come amid reports of a proposed political arrangement between the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) and Wiper
On November 30, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua announced what he termed a new pact between the two parties, claiming they had agreed to field joint candidates in several Nairobi seats during the 2027 elections
“We have agreed that out of the 17 parliamentary seats, we will take 16, and out of the 85 ward seats, DCP and Wiper will take 75,” Gachagua said at the time
However, Kalonzo Musyoka later dismissed the claims, denying the existence of any formal agreement between Wiper and DCP
