Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku on Thursday led a relief mission in Mathare, where a devastating fire earlier in the week left close to 300 residents homeless in the Mlango Kubwa area
The inferno, which tore through an already economically vulnerable community, destroyed homes and personal belongings, forcing affected families to seek emergency assistance
During the visit, CS Ruku supervised the distribution of essential supplies including food, blankets, clothing, and other emergency items aimed at helping displaced families regain stability

Mothers with infants, elderly residents, and small business owners were among the beneficiaries
He noted that assessments were still underway to ensure all affected households receive support, adding that the government was considering long-term interventions among them reconstruction aid and improved disaster-preparedness measures in informal settlements prone to frequent fires
Ruku also used the occasion to urge Nairobi residents to back leaders focused on development rather than political theatrics

Without naming him directly, he criticised former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of fuelling public frustration with “drama and emotion” instead of offering solutions
The CS emphasized that Kenyans deserve leaders who address real issues such as disaster response, livelihoods, and social welfare priorities he said are crucial as recovery efforts continue in Mathare
