Residents of the Galilee area in Gatundu North, Kiambu County, were left stunned on Tuesday after a young woman climbed a high-voltage transmission pylon in what is believed to have been a suicide attempt
According to witnesses, the incident triggered a swift and coordinated response from Kenya Power technicians and Kiambu County firefighters, who worked tirelessly to rescue the woman from the approximately 40-meter-tall structure
The woman, reportedly a university graduate, is said to have been battling depression, allegedly linked to prolonged unemployment
A close friend revealed that the lack of job opportunities for young graduates has pushed many into emotional distress

“We get educated, yet no jobs. People become depressed. My friend had finished her studies but had no job,” the friend said, urging the government to urgently address the growing unemployment crisis among youth
A parent who witnessed the rescue expressed deep concern over rising mental health struggles in the country
“We are so shocked by what is happening. Our children, no matter how well they have studied, are attempting suicide. This lady studied up to university level and had climbed nearly 40 meters. The whole community called for assistance,” the parent said

Residents are now calling on the government and Kenya Power to fence off pylons in the area to prevent similar incidents, particularly involving vulnerable individuals and children
They also appealed for increased mental health awareness and open conversations around depression
“All I can tell the youth is to talk about depression or talk to someone so they can get help,” a resident added
Authorities have not yet released the woman’s identity, but she is currently receiving medical and psychological support
