Homa Bay ODM Officials Demand DG Magwanga’s Resignation Over Support for Independent Candidate

Tensions are rising within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in Homa Bay County after Deputy Governor Oyugi Magwanga openly supported Philip Aroko, an independent candidate, in the Kasipul by-election

Aroko lost to ODM’s Boyd Were in the November 27 vote. Following this, party officials and some residents have called for Magwanga to resign, citing his actions as a breach of party loyalty and a threat to political unity ahead of the 2027 general elections

Sinod Okello, ODM’s organising secretary for Homa Bay Sub-County, criticized Magwanga, saying his support for a candidate outside the party “sent a bad picture” about county governance

Okello urged the deputy governor to step down voluntarily to prevent future conflicts

Support for Magwanga’s resignation has also come from local residents. Polycarp Otieno, an ODM member, said, “If he doesn’t resign or ask for forgiveness, we will force him to. His act was disrespectful and makes it difficult to work with his boss”

Reactions remain mixed, with some residents waiting to see if Magwanga will resign voluntarily, while others suggest impeachment as the only way to resolve the issue
