Wetang’ula Urges Opposition to Stop Attacking IEBC Ahead of 2027 Elections

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has called on opposition leaders to give the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) room to carry out its constitutional mandate as preparations for the 2027 General Election continue.

Wetang’ula argued that political leaders should not attempt to dictate how the electoral commission conducts its affairs, comparing IEBC to a referee whose role should be respected by all players.

The Speaker pointed to recent by-elections, noting that Kenya Kwanza had won several contests while the opposition also secured victories. He questioned why some political leaders accepted the results when they won but began questioning the credibility of IEBC when they lost.

Wetang’ula also urged politicians to avoid abusive language and statements that could undermine public confidence in the electoral commission.

His remarks come amid growing criticism of IEBC from opposition figures over the commission’s preparations for the 2027 polls.

Democracy for Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua recently accused IEBC of laying the groundwork for electoral manipulation through the procurement of a new Integrated Elections Management System. He claimed that the specifications were designed to favour South Korean technology company Miru Systems.

IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon has rejected the allegations, maintaining that the procurement process is open, transparent and above board. Ethekon said no company, including Miru Systems, had been awarded the tender.

As political activity ahead of the 2027 elections intensifies, Wetang’ula maintained that IEBC should be allowed to independently undertake its preparations without political interference.
