Lecturers End Two-Month Strike After Government Agrees to Settle Ksh.7.9 Billion Arrears in Instalments

According to UASU Secretary General Constantine Wasonga, the unions accepted a two-instalment payment plan that will be completed by June 2026

Public university lecturers have officially called off their two-month-long strike after reaching an agreement with the government on the payment of their pending dues

Members of the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU), Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU), and Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Educational Institutions, Hospitals & Allied Workers (KUDHEIHA) signed a return-to-work formula outlining how the government will pay the Ksh.7.9 billion owed under the 2017–2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA)

According to UASU Secretary General Constantine Wasonga, the unions accepted a two-instalment payment plan that will be completed by June 2026

“We have agreed to be paid in two instalments  one between November and December amounting to Ksh.3.8 billion, and the second by June next year. We are happy that we have secured the full amount,” said Wasonga

The unions also signed a framework to guide negotiations for the 2025–2029 CBA

Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi had earlier explained that the government’s financial constraints made it impossible to release the full amount at once, urging the lecturers to accept the phased payments

The deal brings to an end weeks of stalled learning in public universities as lecturers return to class under the agreed terms
