Ruto Hails ‘Historic’ Rwanda–DRC Peace Deal, Commends President Trump’s Role

President William Ruto has lauded the newly signed peace agreement between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda, calling it a “credible and hopeful pathway” toward ending decades of deadly conflict in Eastern DRC

The accord christened The Washington Accord—was signed in Washington, D.C., by DRC President Félix Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame at the Donald J. Trump United States Institute of Peace. President Ruto, who attended the ceremony, described the deal as a decisive turning point for a region long ravaged by violence, humanitarian crises, and instability

“For decades, it has claimed innumerable lives and driven countless families from the safety of their homes”

He added that generations of children have lost the chance at a normal childhood due to displacement, insecurity, and disrupted education, while trade and economic prospects across the region have been severely undermined

Ruto also extended gratitude to U.S. President Donald J. Trump, praising his “steadfast commitment and decisive leadership” in steering the negotiations to a successful conclusion

“We extend our sincere gratitude to President Donald J. Trump for his commitment in helping bring this historic agreement to fruition,” he said

The Kenyan Head of State also commended the East African Community (EAC), the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and other mediators for playing key roles in the peace process

Ruto emphasized that the Washington Accord presents the strongest chance in years to end persistent conflict and create a new era of cooperation between Rwanda and the DRC. He urged all parties to fully honor the agreement and ensure that displaced families can finally return home and rebuild their lives

He reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to supporting peace-building efforts in the region, noting that long-term stability in Eastern DRC is vital not only for its citizens but for the broader East and Central African regions

The Washington Accord outlines mechanisms for de-escalation, cessation of hostilities, and renewed cooperation between Kigali and Kinshasa two countries whose strained relations have fueled unrest in the mineral-rich region

The signing ceremony was attended by several African leaders, including Togolese Council of Ministers President Faure Gnassingbé, Angolan President João Lourenço, Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye, African Union Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Ugandan Vice President Jessica Alupo, and representatives from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates
