The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has dismissed claims of foul play in the death of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo, concluding that he died in a road traffic accident

In a statement issued on Monday, the DCI said investigators conducted an extensive probe to establish the circumstances surrounding Jirongo’s death, including interrogating close associates and individuals who were with him shortly before the incident

Jirongo, 64, died in the early hours of December 13, 2025, after his vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with a Climax Coach bus along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway

He was reportedly driving to his rural home in Lugari at the time of the accident

Investigators recorded statements from several key witnesses, among them Jirongo’s wife, Ann Lanoi Pertet, the bus driver Tiras Kamau Githinji, the bus conductor Manoah Ekokwa Alukoya Olasi, and staff at Eagol Petrol Station, where Jirongo’s vehicle was last seen making a U-turn

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, alongside politicians Rebman Malala and Ibrahim Sambuli who were reportedly with Jirongo at Karen Oasis restaurant on December 12, 2025 also voluntarily gave their accounts to investigators

“Further, seven passengers from the ill-fated bus presented themselves to assist in the investigation, and their statements were recorded,” the DCI said

A multi-agency team visited and processed the crash scene, secured and preserved key exhibits, documented physical evidence, and recovered CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station for analysis. Investigators also obtained the bus manifest and amateur videos from the scene, all of which were subjected to forensic examination.

Based on the evidence gathered, the DCI concluded that the incident was a road traffic accident with no indication of foul play

The investigation file will be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for further direction once remaining procedures are completed

Jirongo was laid to rest on December 30, 2025, at his family homestead in Lumakanda, Kakamega County, next to his parents

The DCI has urged members of the public and political leaders to exercise restraint and avoid speculative statements that could prejudice investigations or cause unnecessary public anxiety
