Senators Order SHA, Police Commission to Reconcile Records on Ksh.1.2B Injury Claims

However, senators raised concern over discrepancies between SHA’s figures and records from the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) and the Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health Services (DOSH)

The Social Health Authority (SHA) has disbursed Ksh.1.2 billion to compensate police officers injured while on duty, CEO Dr. Mercy Mwangangi told the Senate Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations on Thursday

Mwangangi reported that 1,567 claims have been fully settled. She noted that 432 claims were rejected for various reasons, 129 remain disputed, and 95 are still pending due to incomplete documentation

Additionally, 155 claims are currently being processed for payment, while 41 are under further review

However, senators raised concern over discrepancies between SHA’s figures and records from the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) and the Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health Services (DOSH)

As a result, the Committee directed the three agencies to reconcile their data and present a unified report

“We are directing SHA, NPSC and DOSH to engage and submit a concurrent list of all claims,” said Committee Chair Senator Lelegwe Ltumbesi

Senators further cautioned SHA against dismissing claims on grounds that officers were off duty, insisting that police officers are considered to be on duty 24 hours a day

They also affirmed that injured officers should not undergo a second medical assessment, as DOSH is the only legally recognized evaluator for such cases

The Committee pledged to ensure that all affected officers receive their rightful compensation without delay
