Ruto, AU Leaders Chart Path for Major Reforms to Strengthen Africa’s Institutions

Key reform proposals include revitalising peace and security frameworks, ensuring sustainable financing of the Union, operationalising the African Court of Justice, and streamlining AU Assembly decisions and structures

President William Ruto on Tuesday hosted a high-level meeting on African Union (AU) reforms at State House, Nairobi, where he and AU leadership agreed on key steps to transform the continental body ahead of the upcoming Special Summit on Reforms

The meeting brought together members of the AU High-Level Panel on Governance, Peace and Security; the High Representative on Financing the Union; African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf; and Kenyan officials including Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei and the Special Envoy for AU Institutional Reform

As the AU’s Champion for Institutional Reforms, President Ruto received a consolidated report outlining recommendations on priority areas to be addressed during the Special Summit set for November 26, 2025, in Angola

Key reform proposals include revitalising peace and security frameworks, ensuring sustainable financing of the Union, operationalising the African Court of Justice, and streamlining AU Assembly decisions and structures

The leaders urged AU member states to reaffirm their commitment to the reform agenda and accelerate implementation to realise the aspirations of Agenda 2063

The meeting also emphasised the need to strengthen the African Governance Architecture (AGA) and the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA) to better tackle complex and emerging security challenges

Additionally, participants recommended repositioning Africa amid shifting global geopolitics, reviving the spirit of Pan-Africanism, and creating effective mechanisms for sustainable AU financing

The deliberations mark a crucial step toward modernising the African Union and enhancing its effectiveness in driving the continent’s unity, peace, and development agenda
