Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua escalated his criticism of President William Ruto during a political rally in Mwiki on Sunday, December 7, as he continued his campaign to unseat the head of state in the 2027 General Election
Gachagua addressed supporters shortly after attending a church service at Dominion Christian Church in Kasarani. During the rally, he accused President Ruto of selling key national assets, including Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Safaricom, and the Kenya Pipeline Company
“What is remaining is to sell the people of Kenya,” Gachagua charged, alleging that the president had betrayed the country by disposing of strategic public assets
He called on Kenyans to rally behind a united opposition front led by himself and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, insisting that only a consolidated movement could remove the president from office

The event took an unexpected turn when a cow strayed into the crowd, briefly interrupting Gachagua’s address. Supporters were forced to make way as the animal wandered near the podium
“That cow will hurt people. Who brought this cow here? Is it Kasongo? Kasongo should be defeated… Let the devil be defeated!” Gachagua exclaimed as the audience reacted with laughter and confusion
Kenyans took to social media with mixed reactions, with many questioning Gachagua’s focus and campaign tactics
Some argued that the former deputy president was fixated on attacking Ruto rather than outlining his own agenda, while others mocked the incident as symbolic of political disarray
One commenter wrote, “No curse or insult will stop the president from delivering what he promised.”
Another added, “Yaani jamaa anaongea and the whole time hakuna agenda… Ruto alisema ukweli”

Others suggested that Gachagua’s political frustrations were becoming more apparent
Earlier at the church service, Gachagua urged ODM leaders to join the emerging United Opposition ahead of the 2027 polls. He warned that ODM’s continued association with the government could erode its national support base
He advised that if ODM leaders were uncomfortable engaging him directly, they should work with Kalonzo Musyoka to strengthen efforts to challenge Ruto
“The Wiper Party has supported ODM for years; they should not be left behind,” he added
Gachagua maintained that a broad, united political front was necessary to present a formidable challenge to the president in the next election
