Prophet David Owuor, a self-proclaimed “Mighty Prophet,” has become one of Kenya’s most widely recognized evangelical preachers, drawing attention both locally and internationally

Owuor began his ministry in the early 2000s, preaching on the streets of Nakuru after leaving a career as a molecular genetics scientist in the United States

In 2004, he founded the Repentance and Holiness Ministry, which has since grown into a major religious movement

The prophet’s influence has extended beyond Africa. Owuor has visited Venezuela multiple times and was received at the Miraflores Palace by former President Nicolás Maduro in 2024 and 2025

During his visits, he made prophetic declarations claiming protection over Maduro and the country. However, these prophecies were tested when Maduro was captured in a U.S. military operation in January 2026

Owuor has also toured other South American countries, including Chile, where he claimed to have predicted the 2010 magnitude 8.8 earthquake, and Brazil, where he reportedly received a Learjet 45 to aid in his global evangelism

Locally, Owuor’s ministry emphasizes “free worship,” not requiring financial contributions from attendees

His mega-crusades have attracted large crowds, with claims of miraculous healings, including the curing of HIV/AIDS, restoration of sight, and mobility for the disabled

In December 2025, he publicly claimed that several HIV-positive individuals had tested negative following his prayers

These claims prompted concern from the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) and Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, who warned that such unverified healing claims could mislead the public and endanger lives

The ministry, however, maintains that it has documented 30 HIV cases that tested negative at the DNA-PCR level and claims collaboration with global health bodies such as the CDC and WHO

The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) has also cautioned Kenyans against accepting unverified miracle healing claims

Owuor has attracted attention for alleged resurrections, most notably in 2017 with the widely publicized case of Mama Rosa Chepochesau, who was reportedly brought back to life before dying again in 2019.

The prophet’s lifestyle has sparked debate, with reports of luxurious mansions, private jets, and large security convoys accompanying his crusades

While he defends these measures by comparing them to biblical practices of royal protection, they have occasionally disrupted traffic and raised public concern

The growth of mega-churches and claims of supernatural powers has fueled debates on church regulation. Kenya has over 4,000 registered churches, with hundreds more unregistered

Owuor’s ministry has opposed state regulation, calling it unconstitutional and urging authorities to focus on individual errant leaders instead

This comes amid ongoing discussions on the Religious Organisations Bill, which seeks to regulate faith-based institutions and prevent extremism

As Owuor continues to expand his influence, both faith communities and government authorities remain watchful of the implications of his ministry on public health and religious practice
