A Kenya Police rescue helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing on Monday morning while airlifting victims of the Chesongoch mudslide in Elgeyo Marakwet County
The aircraft reportedly developed a mechanical glitch shortly after taking off from the affected area en route to Eldoret Airstrip, prompting the pilot to turn back and make a hard landing at St. Mauras Academy near Chesongoch
Engineers have since been dispatched to assess the chopper, which has been instrumental in ongoing rescue operations since the deadly mudslide occurred
The aircraft has been making an average of four trips daily, ferrying the injured, humanitarian aid, and officials coordinating relief efforts

The helicopter is piloted by Chief Inspector Ruth Rotiken, a seasoned Kenya Police pilot with ten years of experience. Rotiken, who has taken part in numerous disaster missions, described the Marakwet East tragedy as one of the most emotionally overwhelming in her career
“I have been traumatized to see the suffering of children, women, and all residents in affected areas. I pray that God comforts them,” she said
Despite the emotional strain, Rotiken remains focused on her mission to support rescue and recovery operations. The 38-year-old officer, also a mother, emphasized the importance of balancing her demanding career with family life

Having trained in South Africa and undergone several specialized aviation courses, Rotiken’s dedication and courage have made her a role model for young women aspiring to join aviation and law enforcement
Authorities say the temporary grounding of the helicopter will not significantly affect rescue efforts, as alternative arrangements are being made to ensure the continued evacuation and delivery of aid to affected residents
