KTDA Unveils Bold Transformation Plan to Maximise Value for Tea Farmers
NAKURU, Kenya, Oct 29 – The Kenya Tea Development Agency Holdings (KTDA(H) Limited has announced a series of strategic reforms aimed at turning its “Farmers First” philosophy into practical actions that enhance returns for tea growers.
KTDA Group Chief Executive Officer, Wilson Muthaura, said the agency was implementing a comprehensive transformation strategy anchored on sustainability, innovation, and farmer-focused governance.
He emphasized that KTDA’s main goal is to maximise value for farmers while building a world-class, future-ready tea enterprise.
According to Muthaura, the agency has embarked on a major internal restructuring process to ensure effective implementation of the new transformation agenda.
He revealed that the KTDA board had set up ten cross-functional management committees to enhance efficiency, cut costs, and promote value addition across the tea value chain—from farm to market.
“These committees are actively contributing to our newly developed KTDA Group Strategic Plan, which seeks to future-proof our operations,” Muthaura said.
He noted that the transformation strategy was developed collaboratively after a landmark meeting bringing together all 71 factory unit managers and KTDA’s senior leadership—the first of its kind since the Tea Act reforms of 2020.
“The roadmap we created ensures that every decision made directly benefits the farmer,” he explained.
Muthaura added that KTDA’s commitment extends beyond improving tea prices to enhancing the quality of services offered to farmers, including better fertiliser distribution, improved leaf collection logistics, upgraded factory efficiency, and the introduction of traceability tools.
He further stated that the rollout of the Systems, Applications and Products (SAP) enterprise system is already streamlining operations and enabling smarter, data-driven decision-making across the organisation.
Additionally, KTDA has strengthened its digital infrastructure to support more agile processes and eliminate inefficiencies.
“The agency is doubling down on communication and farmer engagement to ensure that growers are not just recipients of services but co-owners of the solutions, as they are both shareholders and strategic partners,” Muthaura affirmed.
