Lukenya University Targets Ksh30 Million in Fourth Ten Million Trees Marathon
Speaking at the launch, Acting Vice Chancellor Dr. Judith Wafula highlighted that the marathon aims to plant 10 million trees over the next decade, contributing to Kenya’s National Tree Growing and Restoration Campaign, which targets 15 billion trees nationwide
Lukenya University, together with its partners, has officially launched the fourth edition of the Ten Million Trees Marathon at Riadha House, Nairobi
The event, which began in 2023 as a one-million-tree project, has evolved into one of the university’s flagship community-led environmental initiatives
Speaking at the launch, Acting Vice Chancellor Dr. Judith Wafula highlighted that the marathon aims to plant 10 million trees over the next decade, contributing to Kenya’s National Tree Growing and Restoration Campaign, which targets 15 billion trees nationwide
So far, the initiative has successfully planted 1,011,060 trees, with an 85% survival rate in the first edition

The university currently operates 17 active tree nurseries, with plans to expand as the campaign reaches new regions
Dr. Wafula reaffirmed the commitment to plant one million trees by March 2026, coinciding with the marathon scheduled for March 28, 2026, in Makueni County
The marathon features six categories to accommodate all ages: 42 km, 21 km, 10 km local race, 5 km fun run, and two cycling events Black Mamba 21 km and Pro-Mountain Bike 42 km
Dr. George Wesonga, chair of the local organizing committee, confirmed a target of 1,000 athletes and cyclists, adding that advanced technology will be used to monitor the race
Prize money for the fourth edition ranges from Ksh 500,000 for the 42 km race, Ksh 250,000 for 21 km, and Ksh 40,000 for both the 10 km local race and cycling categories

During the launch, Lukenya University also celebrated contributions from Kenyan athletic heroes, including former Berlin Marathon champion Patrick Makau, who continues to mentor young athletes and promote sports development
The university emphasized the role of sports in environmental conservation and urged the public, corporate partners, athletes, schools, and government to join the movement
The Ten Million Trees Marathon continues to inspire environmental stewardship while empowering communities nationwide
