Kenyans at home and in the diaspora are mourning the deaths of three US-based siblings who perished in a tragic road accident while on holiday in Kenya

Emmanuel DeLeon, 13, Kairu Winkelpleck, 6, and their elder sister Njeri DeLeon, 16, lost their lives following a serious crash along the Nairobi–Nakuru highway on January 4, 2026. The family, which resides in Waterloo, Iowa, had travelled to Kenya for the holidays when the accident occurred

Emmanuel and Kairu died at the scene, while Njeri was rushed to a Nairobi hospital in critical condition. Despite being placed in a medically induced coma, she succumbed to her injuries on Friday, January 16

The children are the son and daughters of Wangui Ndirangu, formerly of New Jersey and now living in Iowa. They are nieces and nephews of Kairu Ndirangu, Wamuyu, Njeri and Daisy Kariuki, and grandchildren of the late Charity Ndirangu and the late Jim Ndirangu

Their deaths have sent shockwaves through both Kenyan and American communities connected to the family. The parents, who survived the crash without serious injuries, remained in Kenya to coordinate funeral arrangements. Planning meetings have been ongoing at the International Christian Centre, Nairobi, along Mombasa Road

In the United States, the siblings’ schools paid glowing tributes. Emmanuel, an eighth-grader at Hoover Middle School in Waterloo, was remembered as cheerful and positive. His younger brother Kairu, a first-grade pupil at Royal Legacy Christian Academy, was described as joyful, energetic and deeply loved

Njeri, a junior at West High School and a member of the school’s cheerleading team, was remembered by teachers and classmates as kind-hearted and warm. Former teacher Glenda Griffin described her as “sweet, caring, and kindhearted,” noting that she had “the most beautiful smile”

Following the tragedy, a GoFundMe page titled “Support for Leah, Christopher and DeLeon Family” was launched by family friend Lyndie Maina to help cover medical, funeral and travel costs. The fundraiser has so far raised approximately KSh 8.6 million ($66,392) from more than 870 donations

A memorial service for the three children is being held at the International Christian Centre in Nairobi, followed by a funeral service at Kariokor Crematorium on Saturday, January 24, starting at 7 a.m

During the memorial, eulogies painted a vivid picture of three young lives filled with love, laughter and promise. Emmanuel was remembered for his joyful spirit and emerging leadership, Kairu for his boundless energy and playful nature, and Njeri for her grace, compassion and quiet strength

The tragedy has also renewed concern over road safety in Kenya, particularly along major highways. Police reports indicate that more than 290 people were killed in road accidents in the first 21 days of January 2026, an increase compared to the same period last year, underscoring the persistent dangers on the country’s roads
