IEBC Flags Fake Notice Claiming No Contest in Tembelio, Metkei By-Elections
NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 24 – The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has dismissed as fake a Gazette Notice circulating on social media claiming that there will be no contest in the upcoming Tembelio and Metkei Ward by-elections.
In a statement, the Commission clarified that the document titled “Declaration of No Contest for Members of Tembelio and Metkei Wards in the By-Elections scheduled for 27th November 2025” is fabricated and should be ignored.
“The Gazette Notice circulating online titled ‘Declaration of No Contest for Members of Tembelio and Metkei Wards in the By-Elections scheduled for 27th November 2025’ is fake. The Commission advises the public to disregard it,” IEBC said on its official social media pages.
The fake notice falsely claimed that IEBC Chairman Edung Ethekon had declared United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidates Reuben Kigen and Phillip Kipkosgei as the newly elected MCAs for Tembelio and Metkei Wards, alleging no other contenders were cleared for the November 27 by-election.
IEBC cautioned Kenyans against spreading or believing such misinformation, warning that it could mislead voters ahead of the polls.
The Metkei Ward seat fell vacant following the resignation of former MCA Lawi Kipng’etich Kibire in February 2025, after his election as Speaker of the Elgeyo Marakwet County Assembly.
The Tembelio Ward vacancy arose when former MCA Evans Kapkea was appointed Deputy Governor of Uasin Gishu County in 2024.
Meanwhile, IEBC confirmed that by-elections will proceed in 16 electoral units out of the 18 contests previously gazetted.
