DCI Launches Probe into Death of Former MP Cyrus Jirongo in Fatal Road Crash

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched a probe into the death of former Lugari Member of Parliament, Cyrus Jirongo, who died in a road accident on Saturday, December 13, 2025

According to the DCI, the crash occurred in the Karai area along the Nakuru–Naivasha highway, involving Jirongo’s vehicle and a Climax Company Limited public service vehicle (PSV) bus. Preliminary investigations indicate the collision was head-on

“The collision occurred at approximately 2:19 a.m., resulting in a head-on impact that pushed the deceased’s vehicle about 25 metres from the point of impact, while the PSV bus stopped roughly 50 metres away,” the DCI stated

A combined team of homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory was deployed to the scene to conduct initial examinations and secure evidence

CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station shows Jirongo driving into the station at 2:18:40 a.m. from Nairobi but not refueling

He exited the station at 2:19:19 a.m., only to be hit by the PSV bus seconds later at 2:19:25 a.m

The PSV driver, Tyrus Kamau Githinji, was interrogated and released on cash bail, with instructions to report back to Naivasha Traffic Base on December 22, 2025, as investigations continue

Statements have also been recorded from the petrol station night guard, fuel attendant, and other witnesses present before the crash.

DCI said the forensic team will revisit the scene for further analysis, and additional statements will be collected from individuals Jirongo met that night, including those at a meeting at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi

Passengers aboard the PSV bus are also being interviewed. Once completed, the DCI will compile a comprehensive file for submission to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice

Jirongo is scheduled to be laid to rest at his Lumakanda home on Tuesday, December 30
