Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has condemned the manner in which bodies that were exhumed from a mass grave in Kericho County were allegedly buried, saying the process was carried out in a clandestine and unlawful way despite a court order guiding the burials.
According to Murkomen, authorities had issued clear instructions following a court directive on how the bodies were to be handled and laid to rest. However, investigations have revealed that some individuals allegedly ignored the proper procedures and conducted the burials secretly and at unusual hours.
The Interior CS said preliminary findings suggest that the irregular burials may have been motivated by monetary gains, raising serious concerns about the conduct of those involved in the sensitive process. He warned that the government will not tolerate any attempts to exploit such tragic circumstances for personal benefit.
Murkomen confirmed that six suspects have already been arrested in connection with the incident and will face the full force of the law as investigations continue. He noted that law enforcement agencies are working to ensure that everyone involved in the illegal actions is identified and prosecuted.
The government has also assured the public that justice will be served for the victims and their families, stressing the importance of respecting legal procedures and the dignity of the deceased. Authorities say further updates will be provided as the probe into the controversial burials progresses.
The case has drawn national attention, with leaders calling for accountability and strict adherence to court orders, especially in matters involving exhumations and burials linked to ongoing investigations.
