Interior Minister Unveils Measures to Prevent Kidnappings in Kenya

Six People Reported Kidnapped, One Found Dead in Kirinyaga County Over the Past Two Years” Responding to questions in the Senate on Wednesday, Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki revealed that a total of six kidnapping cases had been reported in Kirinyaga County since November 21 at police stations in Kerugoya, Mutitu, Kagumo, and Kiamaciri.

The victims include Peter Mugo (40), who was found dead after his disappearance was reported at the Mutitu police station. The deceased left his home and was hit by a vehicle that fled the scene.

Furthermore, Minister Kindiki stated that the investigation is ongoing concerning Bless Ann Wangeci Maina, who remains missing since her disappearance was reported at the Kiamaciri Police Station.

Victims who went missing but were later found include Susan Waithera, aged 15, who left her mother at a salon. Her disappearance was reported at the Kirinyaga Police Station and she reappeared on May 25, 2023.

Emily Wawira, aged 15, was found two days after her disappearance was reported at the Kagumo Police Station. The high school student from Kiaritha Secondary School failed to return home after leaving school at 11 o’clock in the evening.

Anne Wangui, aged 18, also failed to return home after visiting a friend in Kerugoya town, and her disappearance was reported at the Mutitu Police Station. She was later found in Nairobi before being reunited with her family.

Mercy Wanjiru, aged 17, reported missing at the Kerugoya Police Station after leaving for the Katheri market, was found in Nairobi and returned home.

Minister Kindiki mentioned that the government has established strategies to combat kidnapping by enhancing the Nyumba Kumi initiative and encouraging residents to provide crucial tips to the police.

“The government does not condone kidnapping, and therefore, we invite anyone with information that can assist the police in their investigation to come forward so that the suspects can be apprehended,” the minister said.

Prof. Kindiki was responding to Senator James Murango of Kirinyaga regarding kidnapping cases on the Makutano-Sagana highway.

According to Senator Murango, a total of 11 children have gone missing within the past two years since they were reported missing. The senator also called for “clarification on the investigation of the reported cases at the Sagana, Kiamaciri, and Wanguru police stations.”
