Pwani University students have been introduced to emerging opportunities in the digital economy following a masterclass hosted by Safaricom in partnership with Sprite under the “Hook’d on Fresh” campaign.

The training session, which brought together over 500 students, focused on the rapidly growing creator economy and how young people can leverage digital platforms to build personal brands and generate income through content creation.

Industry experts guided students through practical aspects of digital storytelling, audience building, and monetization strategies, highlighting how consistency and creativity can translate into financial opportunities.

Many students said the session changed their perspective on social media usage, shifting it from recreational activity to a potential career path.

“I used to think content creation was just for fun, but now I see it as a real business opportunity,” said Alfred Fondo, a Computer Science student at Pwani University. “I have learned how I can use my phone to earn and support myself financially.”

He noted that improved access to affordable internet bundles would further support students in growing their online presence and participating actively in digital platforms.

The session also introduced financial literacy components, where students were encouraged to adopt saving and investment habits to ensure long-term financial growth from digital earnings.

Speakers including Tileh Pacbro, Rono, Juma Shibe, and Vallery shared personal experiences on building successful online brands, offering insights into trends, audience engagement, and income generation.

Safaricom’s Wealth Management representative Phelister Wanjiru also educated students on the Ziidi Money Market Fund, encouraging them to prioritize disciplined saving as they explore digital entrepreneurship.

Organizers said the initiative is part of a broader effort to equip Kenyan youth with skills that go beyond content creation, focusing on financial independence and sustainable livelihoods.

The “Hook’d on Fresh” programme continues to expand across universities in Kenya, with previous editions conducted at Africa Nazarene University, University of Eldoret, and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
