The Kenya Red Cross Society is mourning the loss of one of its aqua rescue volunteers, Samuel Wanyonyi Wangila, who died while participating in a search and rescue operation in Nairobi
According to a statement from the organisation, Wangila was part of a rescue team searching for a child who was reportedly swept away by flash floods. During the operation, Wangila was electrocuted while the team was attempting to locate the child’s body
The Red Cross said the tragic incident occurred as the rescuers continued combing the affected area for the missing child following the flooding

The organisation attributed the fatal accident to illegal electricity connections, warning that unsafe wiring in flood-prone areas poses serious risks not only to residents but also to emergency responders working during rescue missions
“The eyes are shedding tears. The heart is heavy with grief. Our colleague Samuel Wangila… has made the ultimate sacrifice,” the Red Cross said in a tribute honoring his dedication and service
Wangila was described as a highly experienced and dependable volunteer who had served with the organisation for more than 15 years. During his time with the Red Cross, he trained and mentored many fellow volunteers in aqua rescue operations
The Kenya Red Cross extended its condolences to Wangila’s family, friends, and fellow volunteers, expressing gratitude for his sacrifice and commitment to saving lives in the community
