According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the arrests are part of a wider probe into a notorious inter-country phone theft syndicate targeting Nairobi’s CBD. Investigators said the suspects failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the large consignment of mobile phones found in their possession
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the two suspects are part of a larger phone theft syndicate involved in stealing mobile phones from members of the public and retail shops before selling them in neighbouring countries,” the DCI said in a statement
Upon inspection, the intercepted packages were found to contain approximately 900 stolen mobile phones. The suspects were subsequently detained at Nairobi Central Police Station, where they are being held pending arraignment. The recovered devices have been secured as exhibits
The recovery comes just days after a similar operation on January 24, 2026, during which detectives recovered over 150 stolen mobile phones, underscoring a sustained crackdown on phone theft syndicates operating within the city
