Police have recovered two illegal firearms that were voluntarily surrendered at Tot Police Station in Kerio Valley as part of the ongoing peaceful disarmament exercise aimed at restoring stability in the region

According to the National Police Service (NPS), residents also handed over ten rounds of ammunition during the exercise, which targets the reduction of illicit weapons among communities affected by persistent insecurity

“This milestone reflects the effectiveness of the sustained dialogue and confidence-building measures undertaken by the National Police Service and other security stakeholders in the region,” the NPS said in a statement shared on X

The police service reaffirmed its commitment to continuing the disarmament programme through community engagement, while strengthening intelligence-led operations to enhance security in Kerio Valley and surrounding areas

The initiative forms part of the government’s broader efforts to restore peace in volatile regions, including Kerio Valley, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Tana River counties

Last week, at least 11 firearms were surrendered to police officers in Tana River County following the declaration of a 60-day amnesty period by regional security teams

In June 2025, President William Ruto reiterated his administration’s resolve to curb the circulation of illegal weapons, warning that firearms in the wrong hands pose a grave threat to public safety and national stability

Speaking during a public exercise in Ngong, Kajiado County, where 6,000 firearms were destroyed, the president said the government would not relent in its efforts to disarm individuals threatening peace

“We will not allow violence to take root in our communities. Our commitment to disarming those who threaten our peace is unwavering,” President Ruto said
