Grandson Arrested for Allegedly Raping and Killing 72-Year-Old Grandmother in Kirinyaga

Residents of Kegwa village in Kirinyaga County are in shock after the alleged rape and murder of 72-year-old Margaret Wanduma Maina by her grandson

Her body was discovered in Njukiini forest, approximately 500 metres from the main road, on Sunday afternoon

Witness Charles Kabuga said he found the body while chasing away monkeys near the forest and immediately raised the alarm

Another witness, Kimotho Munyi, noted that Wanduma’s identity card and ATM card were found at the scene

It is reported that James Njiru, also known as ‘Matheri,’ had been drinking with his grandmother at Muthigini shopping centre the previous night

A boda boda rider reportedly dropped them after they failed to pay the agreed fare

Following his arrest, Njiru allegedly confessed to killing his grandmother, claiming she forced him to have sex with her

Kirinyaga-East sub-county police commander Johnson Wachira confirmed that Njiru and a relative are in custody at Kianyaga police station

Wanduma’s body has been taken to the mortuary pending a postmortem
