Nairobi – Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has confirmed that the government withdrew the security detail of Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, explaining the decision was due to safety concerns.
Governor Natembeya had earlier claimed on Facebook that his security officers were withdrawn unlawfully, accusing the National Police Service (NPS) of violating the National Police Service Act
He said the move, ahead of the highly contested Malava parliamentary by-election, exposed him to risk and interfered with county duties
“There is no court order, no disciplinary communication, and no official explanation for this decision,” Natembeya stated

He called on the NPS to reinstate his security immediately, urging adherence to constitutional standards of professionalism and fairness
Speaking in Kasipul, CS Murkomen confirmed the withdrawal, revealing that some officers attached to VIPs had been found working with criminal elements
He clarified that several political leaders, not just Natembeya, had their security withdrawn due to similar concerns

“Any security measure taken by the National Police Service is to avoid crises. If a police officer attached to a VIP is walking and working with goons, the best thing is to remove them,” Murkomen said
The Interior CS emphasized that the move was part of broader efforts to ensure the safety of public officials and prevent potential criminal activities linked to their security personnel
