Five university students aged between 20 and 22 have been detained as detectives investigate their alleged links to a suspected child sexual abuse network.

Five university students aged between 20 and 22 have been detained as detectives investigate their alleged links to a suspected child sexual abuse network.

The suspects appeared before Eldoret Chief Magistrate Peter Ndwiga, where investigators sought additional time to complete inquiries into the case. The court ordered them to remain at Eldoret Central Police Station until November 3, 2026, when they are expected to return for plea-taking.

According to an affidavit presented by Sergeant Irene Oduor of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations’ Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Protection Unit, the arrests were made on October 9 during an operation at Blue House premises in Nchiru, Meru County.

Investigators suspect the group of involvement in offences targeting children aged between two and seven years, including the alleged recording and circulation of footage depicting minors nude.

Detectives Examine Electronic Evidence

During the operation, officers reportedly recovered mobile phones, SIM cards, storage devices and wireless routers. The equipment is expected to undergo forensic analysis to establish whether it contains evidence linked to the alleged offences.

The prosecution told the court that investigators need more time to examine the devices, identify potential victims and trace financial transactions that could be connected to the suspected activities.

Detectives are also seeking to establish whether other individuals were involved. Information presented during the proceedings indicated that the suspected activities may have extended across several towns, including Meru, Nairobi, Iten, Kapsowar and Eldoret.

Students Raise Concerns Over Education

The suspects are reportedly pursuing university degrees in data science and education. Their lawyer, Christopher arap Mitei, raised concerns about the effect of continued detention on their studies.

The prosecution had requested 21 days to complete the investigations, but the court ordered the suspects to remain in custody until the next scheduled appearance on November 3.

Detectives are continuing with forensic examinations and other inquiries to determine whether the evidence gathered can support criminal charges.
