Cherargei Tells Uganda, Tanzania to Crack Down on Kenyan Activists ‘Interfering in Sovereignty’
Cherargei’s remarks came shortly after Kenyan activists Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo were released from Ugandan detention, where they had been held for 38 days
Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has urged Uganda and Tanzania to take firm action against Kenyan human rights activists accused of meddling in the internal affairs of foreign nations
Speaking during a Sunday service at the PAG Church in Kapsabet town, Cherargei said activists using the guise of human rights protection to destabilize neighboring countries should face punishment
“I want to warn our activists who are busybodies stop exporting your bad manners to other countries. Uganda and Tanzania are sovereign nations,” he said
The senator added that foreign governments should not hesitate to repatriate those found interfering with their politics. “If you get any busybodies or activists who want to destabilize your country’s sovereignty, finya hao, send them back home so we can deal with them,” he added

The duo had travelled to Kampala to support opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, before their disappearance on October 1, 2025
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni later confirmed that the two were arrested by security forces, accusing them of working with Kyagulanyi’s team to incite unrest

Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Minister Musalia Mudavadi said their release followed “sustained diplomatic engagement between Kenya and Uganda,” leading to their safe handover to the Kenyan High Commission in Kampala
Human rights groups across East Africa have voiced growing concern over the safety of activists operating in the region
Njagi and Oyoo’s case mirrors earlier incidents involving Kenya’s Boniface Mwangi and Uganda’s Agatha Atuhairwe, who were detained in Tanzania while attending a court session for opposition leader Tundu Lissu
