Ruto Urges Ukraine to Release Detained Kenyans Linked to Russia–Ukraine War

In a statement issued from Kyiv, President Zelensky confirmed the discussion, saying he had briefed Ruto on Russia’s continued attacks on Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure. He thanked Kenya for its support and solidarity with Ukraine

President William Ruto has called on the Ukrainian government to release Kenyans reportedly being held in custody amid claims that some young citizens were deceived or coerced into joining the ongoing Russia Ukraine war

In a phone conversation with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, Ruto expressed concern over the plight of Kenyans caught up in the conflict and said the two leaders had agreed to raise awareness about the dangers of illegal military recruitment targeting unsuspecting youth

“I have requested President Zelensky to facilitate the release of any Kenyan in Ukrainian custody. I am grateful to His Excellency for acceding to my appeal,” said President Ruto

Ruto also commended President Zelensky for organizing the upcoming Ukraine Food Summit, set to take place later this month, and reiterated Kenya’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations

“We touched upon the issue of Russia’s recruitment of foreign citizens into its criminal war. We are aware of the fraudulent methods being used and will work closely with Kenya to put an end to them,” said President Zelensky

The two leaders also discussed ongoing bilateral projects and pledged to deepen cooperation between their respective governments

Zelensky further noted that Ukraine would soon submit a resolution to the United Nations condemning Russia’s illegal abduction and deportation of Ukrainian children, expressing gratitude for Kenya’s support on the matter
