The utility said the new generation of meters will be deployed mainly to industrial, commercial, and other high-consumption customers whose electricity usage accounts for a significant share of the company’s power sales.
Unlike traditional meters that rely on manual readings, smart meters automatically transmit consumption data to Kenya Power’s monitoring systems in real time. The technology enables the utility to detect unusual consumption patterns, identify possible cases of electricity theft, and respond more quickly to faults affecting customers.

The initiative comes as the company intensifies efforts to reduce commercial losses that have continued to impact its financial performance. By providing accurate and timely consumption data, the smart meters are expected to minimize billing disputes while improving the efficiency of meter management.
Kenya Power believes the rollout will also strengthen customer confidence by ensuring bills accurately reflect actual electricity usage. The automated system is expected to eliminate many of the errors associated with manual meter reading and reduce the need for physical inspections.
The project forms part of the company’s broader digital transformation strategy, which includes adopting advanced technologies to improve operations, enhance network reliability, and provide faster customer service.
Energy analysts say smart metering has become an essential tool for modern power utilities worldwide, offering greater visibility into electricity consumption while helping reduce non-technical losses such as illegal connections and meter tampering.
