Kenya Goes Digital as Birth Certificates Move Online Through e-Citizen Platform

The Kenyan government has unveiled a new digital service allowing citizens to download and print birth certificates online through the e-Citizen platform, marking a significant shift in the delivery of civil registration services.
The announcement was made on Monday, June 22, 2026, after a high-level consultative meeting at Nyayo House in Nairobi between Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and senior officials from the State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services led by Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang.
According to the government, the upgraded system is part of ongoing reforms aimed at digitising public services and reducing the need for physical visits to government offices. Citizens will now be able to access birth certificates remotely, print them instantly, and complete related processes more efficiently through the eCitizen platform.

Officials say the development responds to public concerns raised during Jukwaa la Usalama forums, where citizens highlighted delays and long queues in accessing essential documents. The new system is expected to cut processing time, improve convenience, and reduce administrative bottlenecks.
Murkomen said the move reflects the government’s broader agenda of improving service delivery through technology, noting that digital transformation will make public services more accessible regardless of a citizen’s location.

The Interior Ministry also emphasized that the reforms are part of a wider push to integrate more government services into online platforms, enhancing transparency and efficiency across departments.
In addition, the government has announced plans to strengthen consular services for Kenyans living abroad. The initiative is aimed at improving access to documentation and support through Kenya’s diplomatic missions, particularly for citizens facing urgent administrative needs overseas.
