DCI Arrests Man for Scamming Online Holiday Seekers in Mombasa

The victim reportedly found an online advertisement for “Brima Mangu Apartment 2B” on December 1, 2025, and contacted the advertiser, who identified himself as Brian Masika, claiming to be the property owner

Detectives in Nyali Sub-county have arrested a man suspected of defrauding travellers seeking holiday accommodations through online platforms in Mombasa

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspect allegedly tricked a Nairobi resident who had planned a family vacation

The victim reportedly found an online advertisement for “Brima Mangu Apartment 2B” on December 1, 2025, and contacted the advertiser, who identified himself as Brian Masika, claiming to be the property owner

The two parties reportedly agreed on a rate of Sh6,000 per night, and the victim transferred Sh24,000 for a four-night stay to a mobile money account provided by the suspect

However, upon arrival in Mombasa three days later, the family discovered that the suspect had cut off all communication, leaving them stranded

Authorities were alerted, prompting detectives to launch a manhunt. Using forensic leads, officers traced the suspect to his hideout, where he was arrested

The DCI confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody and will be arraigned in court

As the festive season approaches, the agency is urging the public to exercise caution when booking accommodations online


“Not every enticing offer is legitimate. Stay vigilant to avoid falling victim to scams,” the DCI warned
