Tanzania Suspends Kenya Airways Flights Amid Cargo Operations Dispute”

Tanzania has announced the suspension of all Kenya Airways (KQ) flights starting January 22, in response to a reciprocity dispute arising from Kenya’s denial of a request for all-cargo flight operations by Air Tanzania Company Limited. Hamza Johari, the Director General of the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority, stated that Kenya’s refusal was considered a violation of Section 4 of the Memorandum of Understanding on Air Services signed between the two countries on November 24, 2016, in Nairobi.

The decision to suspend Kenya Airways flights will have significant consequences, given the airline’s frequent operations between Tanzania and Kenya, upon which thousands rely for travel between the neighboring nations.

The official statement released on Monday by the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority reads, “Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority, on behalf of the aeronautical authorities of the United Republic of Tanzania, has decided to rescind the approvals for Kenya Airways (KQ) to operate passenger flights between Nairobi and Dar es Salaam under Third and Forth Freedom Traffic Rights with effect from 22 January 2023.” This move is a reciprocal action against Kenya’s rejection of the Tanzanian request for all-cargo flight operations by Air Tanzania Company Limited under Fifth Freedom Traffic Rights between Nairobi and Third countries, as outlined in the 2016 Memorandum of Understanding.

As a result of this decision, there will be no passenger flights operated by Kenya Airways between Nairobi and Dar es Salaam from January 22, 2024. The statement emphasizes Tanzania’s commitment to adhering to the principles of the Chicago Convention and the Bilateral Air Services Agreement between states.
