Odinga Clarifies Misleading Reports About Endorsing Kalonzo’s 2027 Presidential Bid

Odinga's spokesperson, Dennis Onyango, made it clear on Monday that the praise given to Kalonzo should not be construed as the coalition's definitive stance on the 2027 election, as it is still four years away.

Raila Odinga, the leader of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition, has refuted claims that he is officially endorsing Kalonzo Musyoka, the leader of the Wiper Party, as the coalition’s presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election.

Odinga’s spokesperson, Dennis Onyango, made it clear on Monday that the praise given to Kalonzo should not be construed as the coalition’s definitive stance on the 2027 election, as it is still four years away.

Mr. Odinga’s statement clarified that his commendation of H.E. Kalonzo Musyoka was primarily an acknowledgment and appreciation of his past support in three consecutive elections, Kalonzo’s strong Christian values, and the extensive support he has garnered across the country.

This, however, was not tantamount to an endorsement of Kalonzo as the Azimio presidential candidate in 2027.

The statement emphasized that the coalition’s philosophy revolves around providing equal opportunities to all potential presidential candidates. The actual coalition candidate will only be announced approximately a year prior to the 2027 elections.

The statement also conveyed Odinga’s confidence that Kalonzo Musyoka would be a formidable opponent against Hon. William Ruto if they were to compete in a free and fair presidential contest.

This assertion contradicted Mr. Ruto’s recent claim that he could easily defeat the Wiper leader.

Odinga further assured Azimio supporters and the nation that he intends to remain actively engaged in party and national politics leading up to the 2027 elections.

This statement comes in response to Odinga’s recent remarks, made during Senator Oburu Oginga’s birthday celebration in Bondo, Siaya County, where he accused President Ruto of attempting to sow division within the coalition by speculating falsely about Kalonzo’s candidacy in 2027.

Odinga affirmed their commitment to stand by Kalonzo and called for an end to the dismissal of the Wiper leader’s abilities.

Additionally, on October 8, President Ruto asserted that Odinga owed him a political debt and should repay it by supporting him in the 2027 General Elections when he seeks re-election.

Ruto stated that if Odinga did not run, he would be competing alongside Kalonzo Musyoka.
