Man Robbed by fellow man posing as a woman in a bar

A data analyst in Kayole, Nairobi, named Johnson Onyango, is grappling with substantial losses after an unexpected encounter at a nightclub. Mistaking a man, later identified as Evans Willis Ouma, for a woman, Onyango took him home, only to be drugged and robbed.

Onyango suffered losses totaling Sh145,000, including Sh8000 in cash, five mobile phones, and a pair of shoes valued at Sh7000. Ouma, the alleged perpetrator, now faces charges of stupefying to commit an offense, theft, and handling stolen property.

The incident unfolded on December 8, 2023, when Onyango met Ouma in a club. Prosecutors accuse Ouma of administering a drug to subdue Onyango, leading to the theft of various items. Notably, Ouma is accused of dishonestly retaining a mobile phone and a set of keys belonging to Onyango.

Onyango narrated to the police that after leaving the club with who he believed was a woman, they continued drinking at home. However, Ouma, who had been posing as a woman, served Onyango wine, causing him to pass out. While in a semi-conscious state, Onyango overheard Ouma making calls to arrange transportation.

The following day, Onyango woke up to discover the theft of his belongings and reported the incident to Kayole police station. Subsequent investigations led to Ouma’s arrest at his home in Dandora, Nairobi.

During court proceedings, it was revealed that Onyango only realized the true gender of his companion after Ouma’s arrest. Ouma denied the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Agnes Mwangi at the Makadara Law Courts.

Magistrate Mwangi, acknowledging that Ouma is transgender, sought guidance on where to detain him. Prison officials indicated that Ouma had been held in a men’s prison before, and he was subsequently released on Sh200,000 bail with no option for cash bail.

The case is scheduled for mention on January 9, with the trial set to commence on July 9, 2024.
