Flames Engulf Ebrahim Shopping Mall in Nairobi’s Central Business District

A fire broke out at Ebrahim Shopping Mall in Nairobi’s Central Business District in the early hours of Saturday, prompting an investigation by the Nairobi police into the cause of the incident.

The fire, which started around 4 am, ravaged the first and second floors of the building located along Moi Avenue. The exact cause is yet to be confirmed, with eyewitnesses speculating it may have resulted from an electricity fault.

However, police are withholding confirmation until their investigations are concluded.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident, but property of unknown value was destroyed in the affected areas.

Nairobi City County firefighters responded to the emergency, taking over two hours to fully extinguish the fire and prevent its spread to neighboring premises. Security officers cordoned off the area as fire marshals battled to contain the blaze.

This incident marks the first fire in the city since February 2022 when a similar incident occurred at a building housing Sunbeam Shopping Complex along Mfangano Street. The Nairobi Fire Department, bolstered by Governor Johnson Sakaja’s allocation of Sh165 million in the 2023 Appropriation Bill, responded promptly to mitigate the damage.

Out of the allocated funds, Sh120 million was designated for constructing fire stations in Gikomba, Kangemi, and Clay City. An additional Sh25 million was allocated to the Kangundo Road fire station for registration, setup, and accreditation, while Sh20 million aimed at renovating the dormitory at Tom Mboya Fire Station.

City Hall, addressing the longstanding issue of insufficient fire stations, recently constructed new facilities in Waithaka, Kangundo, Ruaraka, and Gigiri, totaling approximately Sh1 billion. These additions provided much-needed relief for city residents who had been relying primarily on the Koja fire station and the one at the Industrial Area.
