20 liquor joints shut, 25 people arrested in starehe Nairobi

Approximately 120 liquor joints have been shuttered and 25 individuals apprehended in a rigorous crackdown within Starehe sub-county, Nairobi County, as revealed by Governor Johnson Sakaja. The crackdown, orchestrated by the Nairobi Liquor Department in collaboration with Security and Compliance and National Police, focused on six major bus termini.

Operational teams were dispatched to Country Bus Station, Muthurwa Terminus, Hakati Bus Station Terminus, Accra Road Terminus, Latema Road Terminus, and Old Nation Roundabout. At Country Bus, ten joints were closed, leading to four arrests; Muthurwa saw the closure of 20 joints; Hakati station had 23 joints shuttered with nine arrests; Accra Road witnessed the closure of 27 joints and eight arrests; Latema Road had 18 joints closed, and Old Nation saw the closure of 22 outlets with six individuals arrested.

This crackdown was initiated following Governor Sakaja’s directive to crack down on all wines and spirit joints located near terminals in the sub-county. The directive came in response to concerns raised during a meeting with the Matatu Owners Association (MOA) and officials from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) on February 24. Sakaja expressed worry over the surge in road accidents attributed to drunk driving.

Highlighting the alarming statistics of deaths in the county, mainly attributed to alcohol-related incidents as detailed in a report by NTSA, Sakaja emphasized the prevalence of drivers and touts spending excessive time in these liquor joints, which have transformed into makeshift bars and drinking dens. Furthermore, it was revealed that the targeted bars had been operating with the requisite licenses, further underscoring the gravity of the situation.
